The Pilates method focuses on the precision and flow of movement along with breath control. It is a mind/body technique that emphasises the importance of movement patterns being generated from a strong and stable centre or core.

The Pilates method is based on these 8 principles, which are reflected throughout all classes and each exercise-

  • Breathing
  • Concentration
  • Control
  • Centrering
  • Precision
  • Flow
  • Integrated isolation
  • Routine

Joseph Pilates (1883-1967) was the founder of the 34 foundation exercises that are now known as Pilates exercises- he had a background of working with injured soldiers in WW1, and then progressed onto working with dancers in New York City. He had a keen interest in the link between keeping physically fit and active and keeping mentally well, along with recovering from many illnesses such as influenza, rickets and asthma. His legacy lives on and has is used by millions worldwide.
